The selection of new members is determined the the VAHS Faculty Council ( a five member selection committee that is appointed by the principal) and approved by the principal.
 
1. Sophmore and Junior students'  academic records are reviewed in January to determine those students who are scholastically 
eligible for membership. 
 
2. Students who are eligible scholastically are notified in writing and informed that for further consideration for selection they must complete and turn in the NHS Student Activity Information Form. This form will demonstrate the candidate's accomplishments in the areas of character, service, and leadership. This form must be submitted by the deadline outlined in the notification letter.
 
3. VAHS faculty members will evaluate the candidate's character, leadership and service in the classroom using the Faculty Rubric.
 
4. The Student Activity Information Form and the Faculty Rubrics are reviewed by the Faculty Council. Those candidates who demonstrate outstanding leadership, character, and service and receive a majority vote of the Faculty Council, are informed in writing about their selection and the date and time of the induction ceremony.
